Art above a sofa looks wrong for one of two reasons: it's too small, or it's hung too high. Both are easy to fix with a couple of numbers.

The rule: two-thirds to three-quarters of the sofa width

Your art (a single piece, or a group treated as one block) should span roughly two-thirds to three-quarters of the sofa's width. A standard three-seater is about 200 cm wide, so you're aiming for art that fills roughly 130–150 cm across.

Anything narrower than half the sofa looks lost. Anything wider than the sofa looks like it's overflowing.

One print, or a group?

• One large print (40×60 cm or bigger) is the simplest option and reads as confident. On a two-seater, a single 40×60 cm canvas is about right.
• A pair of 40×60 cm prints hung side by side, with a small gap, spans roughly 85 cm — good for a compact sofa.
• A group of three or more lets you hit any width. Treat the whole arrangement as one block when you measure — see our gallery wall guide.

How high to hang it

The centre of the art should sit about 145–150 cm from the floor — gallery height, roughly average eye level. But above a sofa there's a second rule that matters more: keep the bottom edge 15–25 cm above the top of the back cushions. Any higher and the art floats away from the furniture; any lower and heads knock it.

If those two numbers disagree because you have a low sofa or high ceilings, follow the cushion rule — the art needs to relate to the sofa, not the room.

If your print is smaller than ideal

A 40×60 cm print on its own can look under-scaled above a big three-seater. Three ways to fix it:

• Frame it with a wide mount. A generous border pushes the visual footprint out by 10–15 cm each way.
• Buy two or three and hang them as a set.
• Choose canvas over paper. A frameless canvas reads slightly larger than the same image behind a frame, because there's no border eating into it.
